Financing food system transformation

We will not see food system transformation until the economics add up- when doing the right thing for business equates to doing the right thing for society. Fortunately, 2021 presents key opportunities to realign the risks and incentives of food system investments, paving the way to a new food economy.

WBCSD’s Vision 2050 outlines “A regenerative and equitable food system producing healthy, safe and nutritious food for all” -and a pathway towards this objective that includes action on three areas that will be discussed in this panel:

  1. Equitable distribution of value throughout the food value chain
  2. End-to-end transparency is built from farm to fork
  3. The true value and cost of food is acknowledged and accounted for.

The 2021 Food System Summit presents an unprecedented opportunity to progress towards this vision by furthering awareness and policy that promotes a better understanding of business impacts on people and nature (including the true value of food), and channel flows of public, private, and blended finance to the most sustainable companies and activities. WBCSD provides a key interface with the activities of the 2021 Food System Summit, including curating the Finance Network for the Summit.

This session will explore finance as a key enabler of food systems transformation, understanding how we can correct under-investment in long term sources of value creation- including building thriving communities and protecting and enhancing the carbon sequestration of agriculture.
